She wasn't snooping. She was looking for his car keys.

But when Elena reached into the side pocket of James's gym bag, her fingers didn't find keys. They found a phone. A second phone. One she had never seen before.

It was a cheap prepaid thing. No lock screen. She pressed the power button and the screen lit up with forty-three unread messages. All from the same contact. Saved simply as "M."

Her hands were shaking as she scrolled. Date plans. Inside jokes. Photos she wished she'd never opened. Six months of conversations. Six months of a life she knew nothing about.

Elena sat on the laundry room floor for twenty minutes before she could breathe again. James was upstairs watching TV with their two daughters. Acting like everything was normal. Because for him, it was.

The next morning, she didn't confront him. She did something worse. She started reading from the beginning.

M's real name was Mara. She was twenty-nine. She worked at the same hospital as James. And from the messages, Elena could tell this wasn't just physical. He told Mara things he hadn't told Elena in years. About his fears. About feeling invisible in his own house. About wanting to start over.

Elena put the phone down. She walked upstairs. She looked at James, asleep on the couch with their youngest daughter curled up beside him. And she felt something she didn't expect. Not rage. Not sadness. Relief.

Because Elena had a secret too.

Three years ago, during the worst year of their marriage, she had an affair of her own. A coworker named Daniel. It lasted four months. She ended it when she realized she was pregnant. She told James the baby was his. He never questioned it.
